Obstacles for Chinese EFL Learners to Improve Speech Intelligibility
Astheprimarymeansofcommunication,speechisanessentialaspectforhumanstointeractandbuildconnectionsinthesocialworld.Speechintelligibilityiscriticalinsocialcommunication;unintelligibilitymayleadtoconfusion,misunderstanding,andfrustration.ManyChineselearnersofEnglishfinditchallengingtoapplyEnglishintosocialinteractionandreachmutualintelligibilitywithinternationalcommunicators.ThisarticleanalyzestheobstaclesimpedingChineseEFLlearners’speechintelligibilitydevelopment,fromtheaspectsofphonology(segmentalandsuprasegmentalfeatures)andpragmatics.SomestrategiesareproposedtohelpChineselearnersamelioratephonologyandpragmaticsproblemsandimprovespeechintelligibilityinEnglishcommunication.
